Up to 84 percent of employers now require drug testing for new hires, and many also conduct random drug tests to guarantee a consistently drug-free work environment. Typically, employers obtain a urine sample for testing, but blood, saliva, sweat and even strands of hair can also reveal the presence of drugs. Drug tests can detect marijuana, PCP, opiates, cocaine, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, propoxyphene and alcohol.

This is especially true for manufacturers due to the use of heavy machinery and exposure to potentially dangerous chemicals, extreme temperatures and sharp instruments in the work environment. In fact, some statistics show that regular drug testing can reduce the risk of accidents by 71.2 percent each year.
