Drug testing methods
We can administer drug tests using a variety of collection methods, depending on your situation. Each method has pros and cons, and you should speak to one of our specialists to determine which is best for you.
Urinalysis drug testing
Urinalysis is the most common drug testing method, and is currently the only approved method for DOT drug testing. This is fast, easy, and inexpensive, but it does have a few drawbacks.
You’ll need to secure a private bathroom, disable the sink and toilet, and place a bluing agent in the water in the toilet bowl. Privacy concerns may also present a problem because the test must be performed by collector of the same sex.
Urinalysis can detect drug use for a longer period of time, but it cannot accurately detect recent drug use.
Oral fluid / mouth swab drug testing
Oral fluid collection is newer and is gaining momentum because it’s faster and easier than urinalysis, yet is still just as accurate and inexpensive. This particular method of drug testing is becoming increasingly popular in Atlanta, especially for employers who are trying to determine impairment rather than just whether an employee has used drugs in the past.
Its greatest benefit is that it can be conducted literally anywhere—even in plain view of other people, because oral fluid collection is as simple as swiping a sterile cotton swab along the inner cheek to collect a small saliva sample.
This method has the shortest detection window, however, it can detect drug use almost immediately after use.
Hair drug testing
Hair drug testing is less common, but provides the same convenience of oral fluid drug testing.
For testing, the collector will snip a small (less than 1” wide) section of hair, preferably from near base of the scalp, and secure it in a specimen container. While this drug testing method is incredibly simple and convenient, some employees might object to having their hair cut.
This method has the longest detection window, but it generally cannot detect drug use that has occurred within the last few weeks.
